Types of barcodes on Indian products
Most Indian FMCG products use EAN-13 barcodes (13-digit). Some older products use EAN-8 or UPC-A. OwnStore supports all three.
Custom-printed barcodes for your own products (non-FMCG) can be generated inside OwnStore and printed on a label printer.
Three ways to scan barcodes
1. USB barcode scanner (₹700–₹2,000)
Plug into any PC or Android tablet. Acts as a keyboard — scan the barcode, it types the product code instantly. Fastest option for high-volume counters.
2. Bluetooth barcode scanner (₹1,500–₹4,000)
Wireless, works up to 10 metres from your phone or tablet. Ideal for warehouse stock-taking and retail floors where the billing counter isn't fixed.
3. Phone camera (free)
OwnStore's built-in scanner uses your phone camera. Point at the barcode → product auto-fills in the billing screen. No extra hardware. Slightly slower than dedicated scanners but perfectly usable for low-volume shops.
